Sibiu’s Small Square, dominated by the Council Tower and the House of Arts, retains the intimate atmosphere of the old town. A landmark building, the Butchers’ Guild House, documented since 1370, has over time housed guilds, shops, and storage rooms. In the 18th century the building was expanded, and in 1851 its side arcades were walled in to enlarge the ground-floor shops. Restored between 1967 and 1972 under architect Otto Czekelius, it regained its original roof and arcades opening to the square, while also adapting to modern technologies. After serving commercial and cultural purposes, it came in 1982 under the Brukenthal Museum, and in 2002 under the ASTRA Museum Complex, which inaugurated the Saxon Ethnography Museum “Emil Sigerus.”Today, renamed House of Arts – Center for Regional Activities and Resources, it hosts craft workshops, shops, multifunctional halls, and a permanent exhibition on traditional trades, its main exhibit being the very roof structure. Functional reconversion required modern additions such as an elevator and an exterior corten steel staircase, yet the building preserves the architectural unity of the 18th century, standing as an expressive landmark in the Small Square ensemble.
